From Groningen to Lviv: 29 days, almost 1,600 km, and €20,000 for Ukrainian children

An inspiring story of support and goodwill that began with a simple message. Liam, a geography teacher from the Netherlands, wrote to the Ridni Foundation:

“I want to help Ukrainian children and youth. I am planning a cycling trip to raise funds.”

This message sparked an idea that transformed into a brave and ambitious plan: to cycle from Groningen to Lviv to support children deprived of parental care and youth from frontline communities.

A journey measured in kindness

  • 29 days.

  • Almost 1,600 km.

  • Rain, wind, border crossings, a broken bicycle — and no doubt about the goal.

Liam cycled every day, knowing that every kilometer was a contribution to the future of children who need support the most today.

Liam’s journey is a story of courage and a big heart. It reminds us that one person truly can change someone’s life. For us at the Ridni Foundation, this is further confirmation that kindness knows no borders, and support is possible from any corner of the world. We are sincerely grateful to Liam and everyone who joined this initiative,
— Mariana Romaniak, CEO of the Ridni Foundation.

€20,000 raised!

Liam successfully raised half of the amount through his campaign, and the other half was generously matched by a Dutch donor.

How were the funds used?

  • Summer camp for teens: A portion of the funds was used to organize a summer camp in Lviv for teenagers participating in the “Spilnota — Ridni” program. Five days in the Carpathian Mountains provided the children with relaxation, communication, and new experiences: mountain climbing, hikes, and time spent in a safe circle of friends.

  • Frontline support: The remaining funds were directed toward supporting children and youth from frontline regions who are currently enduring difficult circumstances and require additional care.

Liam reflects on the initiative:

I am simply happy that I was able to do something to make Ukrainian children smile.

We sincerely thank Liam for his initiative and bravery. This is an example of care that has no borders and proof that even one person can make the world a warmer place for others.
